Hemedi Mbaruku

Hemedi is not relative of E.S.Tingatinga although he is painting with the group of relatives in Morogoro Stores in Oysterbay. He was born on the island of Pemba, north of Zanzibar. Hemedi doesn't paint in the traditional Tinga Tinga style. He masters the realistic style and incorporates various realistic images of people in the Tinga Tinga paintings. For example, he painted Barack Obama having safari in the savannah of Serengeti. Many customers commission Hemedi to paint relatives or friends. Also most of the names on the name plates are written by Hemedi. If you want to see extensive collection of Hemedi's paintings, then take ferry to Kigamboni in Dar es Salaam and head to Mikadi Beach Resort where you will find mural paintings. Since Hemedi isn't traditional Tinga Tinga painter, he was often omitted from publications and exhibitions. However he belongs absolutely to the best cartoonists in Tanzania and his paintings of harbors, cities are just stunning. Hemedi's design was also chosen for the logo of the Tinga Tinga Arts Cooperative Society which main theme is the head of leopard. One of Hemedi's images was also published in the text book for basic schools in Brazil. There are certainly many more publications using Hemedi's images but no one made any comprehensive list yet.
