Thobias Lichanda

Thobias Lichanda is both makonde carver and building constructor. He studied the building subject  for one month in 1997 in Sweden at FDC in Hjo, his teacher was Gunnar Lind. Maybe therefore the house of Thobias Lichanda is so defferent. (see gallery). But he has also a traditional house nearby. Thobias Lichanda is born in 1973 in Masasi in southern Tanzania. He went to primary school in Chikundi and then in 1986 he was taught carving by his father Tindo Lichanda. In 1992 he came to Dar es Salaam. In 1995 he started to attend the Bagamoyo Sculpture School where he stayd two years. During these two years he was taught by sculptor of Polish origin Stanislau Lux (name to be confirmed)  After Bagamoyo School and visit in Sweden he was building houses in Chome (Lichanda says he helped  to build three houses). All the time he produced sculptures which were sold mainly in Mwenge Market in Dar es Salaam. In 2005 he was invited to Czech Republic to festival by Miroslav Sirs. There he showed the carving skills to wide public. Thobias Lichanda is multitalented person, he worked also att National Bureau of Statistics and he knows well English. He is waiting together with his wife the first child
